Welcome to our first Newsletter of 2008!

Learning to Earning and The Personal Skills Journey bridge the gap between the development of personal skills in education and the world of work.  This unique programme provides young people the opportunity to explore and develop the essential skills required for the ever more competitive workplace.

Supporting Conferences

Supporting Conferences

Learning to Earning is a proud sponsor of the BSA (Boarding Schools Association) Annual Conference for Deputy Heads which takes place in early February in Manchester. We also recently provided sponsorship to the 2007 annual HMC (Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference) in Bournemouth.

We are enthusiastic in our support for such events which enables us to discuss our methods and ethos with influencial senior staff from independent schools. We look forward to supporting the COBIS conference in the same way.

Collaborating with BT

Collaborating with BT

Learning to Earning in their development of the Personal Skills Journey programme are ‘collaborating’ with BT, as part of the "Better World Campaign". Please click on the link provided (BT logo) and have a look at the FREE resources available for teachers, pupils and parents.

Dave Hancock - BT Head of Education and Volunteering says....."The BT Education programme is passionate in it’s promotion of the key role communication skills play in our lives. We recognise that in this increasingly competitive world, we need to equip our young people with an understanding of the basics in life as early as we can, as businesses both large and small cannot afford to recruit staff who are unprepared for their start in the world of work – The Personal Skills Journey is unique, developing student skills for communication, self promotion and life beyond school.’’

The Kendrick Federation, Reading is an ongoing collaborative project between Kendrick School and Reading Girls’ School in partnership with Thames Valley University. It provides opportunities for girls through academic and vocational excellence studying at the schools.

Lloyds TSB Group plc, supported by Mike Fairey - Deputy Chief Executive, have committed to support and sponsor the Kendrick Federation. They did this recently by sponsoring 2 days of personal skills development for all students in year 12 from both schools. Learning to Earning designed and delivered the training which was well received by both staff and students. We are grateful to Anne Philips, Business Coordinator for the Kendrick Federation, who helped us to deliver the events and in her great support of our Personal Skills Journey Programme.

Anne had this to say after the events: "I agree that the two days were successful in delivering an enjoyable, interesting and varied programme which consistently challenged and informed the participants. The energy levels were high throughout, and there was a real 'buzz' at the end of the final session. The Personal Skills Journey log given to all students is an excellent example of the high standard of resources used throughout. "

The Diversity Game

The Diversity Game

An integral part of the Personal Skills Journey is 'The Diversity Game'. It provides a fun and engaging way to explore the appreciation of difference in others and uniqueness in oneself.

With careful and professional management from our facilitators the sessions involve students playing the game in small teams, discussing outcomes and themes from it  and learning key lessons relating to diversity and equality both at school and in the workplace.

Brentwood School

Brentwood School

Our relationship with Brentwood School strengthens and they have asked us back again in June of this year to deliver another Personal Skills Journey Programme for their Prefect community. This is what Head of Sixth Form, Katie Beston had to say.

"We have been delighted by the professional approach taken by Learning to Earning. They understand how young adults operate and were able to motivate even the most introverted participant. In approach, the Team showed a genuine interest in the individual students, which promoted an atmosphere of respect and security. Each person was challenged to reflect on the way they operate. As an organiser I felt confident that our specific requirements would be catered for and valued the time spent in preparation and in reviewing the success of our training. Imaginative, intuitive and inspirational summarises the way I view the team and experience. Looking back, the training period was an oasis of calm and personal development. Looking forward, I can’t wait to see a new cohort blossom in the same way. This training was a valuable part of the participant’s education for life skills and I recommend it without reservation."

The Personal Skills Journey Book

Our partnership and collaboration with BT has now produced our handbook to support the programme. BT have worked closely with us over a number of months to support the design and production of the book which is provided for all students attending the programme as an integral and inclusive part of it.

The book contains a great deal of additional information about the programme themes as well as sections for students to capture their learning and to create personal action plans.

The pages contained in the book are available for free download on the BT Better World Campaign website at www.btbetterworld.com
